Setting up an effective display for action figures and collectibles doesn’t have to require a complex solution. I’m using a simple, space-saving option: the IKEA Billy bookcase with a full glass door. It’s affordable*, clean, and easy to customize.
*The door is more expensive than the cabinet, mind you…
Display Cabinet Setup: IKEA Billy with Glass Door
The Billy bookcase works well as a collectible display cabinet, especially with the glass door for protection and visibility. I decided replace the included MDF shelves with glass shelves (sold separately) to improve the aesthetics, but MDF is still a nice look, if you prefer. One middle wooden shelf remains for structural support.
Bottom Shelf: Storage for Unboxed Figures
The bottom section is currently used for storage—figures I’ve either unboxed or plan to unbox soon. Right now, it holds a few S.H. Figuarts things that I haven’t opened yet, and other bits. This section isn’t part of the final display but helps keep things organized.. I may well turn it to a display section though. Maybe for sealed items, or something.
Middle Shelf: Flexible Use
I haven’t finalized the middle section. I may use it to replace figures in and out, and a section to film B-roll clips for my YouTube reviews. You know, a “on-the-shelf” look.
Top Shelf: Premium Figure Display
The top shelf is intended for premium figures. I’ve temporarily placed a Rocket Toys Hyuga Hinata here to test the visual impact and scale. The goal is for this section to highlight standout pieces and draw attention. So 1/6 scale or other expensive, or just things I looooove will go here.
This setup is still evolving. If you have tips on lighting, figure positioning, or space optimization for small displays, feel free to share. I’m aiming for a clean, high-impact display in a compact space.
So far, this cabinet is looking like a good, budget choice (sans the door). I will think about theming sections, as I collect across videogames, anime, etc. I just need to be wise and strict on what gets to be featured. A challenging mission given how many collectibles I possess…
