Review: RocketToys Sengoku Basara Date Masamune 1/6 Scale Figure

Believe it or not, this RocketToys Sengoku Basara Date Masamune figure is RocketToys’ first release. It’s surprising in a few ways; the fact they are a new make/label at the time, and Sengoku Basara being mostly popular in Japan, with not much in the way of new games or anime.

What is Sengoku Basara?

Sengoku Basara originally came to us from Capcom as a Dynasty Warriors sort of game set in a way more dramatised feudal Japan. Over the years, it has expanded into anime, manga, and even a stage play.

Despite its popularity in Japan, Sengoku Basara hasn’t seen the same focus in the Western markets, with only a handful of games every being localised in the west. First it came out as an over-localisation in Devil Kings back on PS2, and then more reasonably years later with Sengoku Basara 4.

I’ve had limited experience with the core games, but the anime, now that’s something I recommend checking out. It’s exciting, looks great, has a great soundtrack and fun, crazy characters!

RocketToys’ First Figure Release

As I mentioned, this is RocketToys’ first 1/6 scale figure, alongside opposite but still a Basara character, Sanada Yukimura. Since then, RocketToys have made some amazing Naruto pieces (e.g. Hatake Kakashi), and I’ve come to love their first wave of output!

In general, you’re getting a 1/6 Scale, officially licensed figure made with high detail, lots of packed in features, mixed materials, albeit with a high price tag!

Unboxing The RocketToys Sengoku Basara Date Masamune Figure

Unboxing the figure reveals intricate design choices and attention to detail.

  • Outer Packaging: A vibrant and visually appealing blue box featuring Masamune’s dragon motif, and gold accents that elevate the overall look.
  • Inner Packaging: A high quality print of the figure, followed by the figure is cushioned with layers of foam to protect from damage.
  • Documentation: Comes with a printout of relevant character information.

It’s not long before you see the level of detail in the figure, really.

Design & Detail of the RocketToys Sengoku Basara Date Masamune Figure

Wow. I don’t have a large 1/6 collection, and from what I see the amazing ones tend to be actor-like figures e.g. HotToys or InArt. Now, an anime figure in the same vein is just something amazing!

Aesthetic Features:

  • Head Sculpt: The attention to detail is immediately apparent, showcasing an amazing hair sculpt across each head (minus the helmet head, which is just rounded off to allow wearing the helmet!) with different layers of paint adding to the depth.
  • Eyes: The eyes are well made, with the visible eye quite like a dragon, and the other covered with the patch. Unfortunately they are pre-fixed eyes and cannot be repositioned, if you prefer that option.
  • Body (Outer) : Capcom designed their version of Masamune with a gorgeous blue and some cool design elements. The figure does its best to stick to it, with flared collars, a chest plate, shoulder and leg panel armour and more. There is a faux-chainmail shirt also providing the base layer of clothing. His gauntlets are separate pieces that fit over his chain-mail. There is a sash that has a small button-velcro (what’s the real term?!) which I find on mine to be a snug fit. Material wise, it feels like pleather for the blue portion, so time will tell how it holds up. The rest is a combination of other soft goods (shirt) or soft plastic (gauntlet). It’s worth also noting his helmet is nicely made too, with the iconic moon being a nicely created here. There is a magnet that helps keep the helmet supported on the alt. head.
  • Body: Without totally stripping it, the figure’s body is a lean sculpt overall, and you can feel some of that in the legs, or take a peek if you shift his clothes some. It’s a sturdy build and one that you don’t see.

Articulation :

Although I expected limited articulation, there are still cool poses to get out of this. Just be careful or you might damage something- in my case, I actually broke it at the waist!

broken dreams

This was my own fault for thinking he could twist at the waist more… I still sort of feel like he could and maybe it just cracked. Ultimately, while it’s not totally snapped back together, it’s not noticeable just on display. Maybe one day I’ll buy a second copy, it’s a good enough figure to want two of…

  • Head: Slight movement, more limited with the helmet on, but it is definitely serviceable. His hair is really nice so it might largely depend on the what mood you’re when it comes to display option.
  • Arms and Legs: There’s good articulation yet hindered by the clothes; so handle with care or you might tear his pants!

Option parts:

RocketToys also done an amazing job here. There’s plenty packed into the box, and really, most of us just want him to have 6 swords, right?

  • Swords: Yep, he comes with six swords—each thoughtfully designed with a realistic metallic finish. The blade portion is a bit of a fingerprint magnet, so wipe it down.
  • Hands: Multiple interchangeable hands provide various gripping ways, including the Wolverine-like claw hands, and it actually supports it well, after the initial fiddly setup.
  • Base Stand: Standard display base featuring the Sengoku Basara logo.

Conclusion of RocketToys Sengoku Basara Date Masamune

Honestly, this Rocket Toys Date Masamune is a beautiful, fantastic piece that showcases a fun character design in detailed 3D. Sengoku Basara fans have a center piece item here, for sure. And if you pair it with Sanada Yukimura, you’ll have a stunning duo to occupy a well deserved spot on your display.

Given the price, it’s definitely not for everyone’s budget, so if you can view it or admire it, do so, it’s that good! If you can manage to still find one, I for one recommend it. What a cool figure!
