I beat him. The Black Bear Guai! Watch how I took him down, and read on for some additional thoughts!
This was tough! I deliberately limited how much I’d upgrade Wukong and chose not to use the fire blanket, even though I had it on me! I just knew I had it in me to beat this boss, it just required more careful anticipation and dodging, because naturally this Black Bear Guai’s hits hurt!
It took a few dozen attempts, but I did it. It wasn’t the cleanest of fights, but after a while I just wanted to beat it and move on, right.
Grueling Battle
Like most boss battles in Chapter 1, a lot of it is patience, intention and learning boss attack animations. I found this bearable (HA!) compared to Souls-like games, not sure why, exactly.
For this boss I kept mistiming my dodges, and since he hits hard, I wouldn’t last all that long. You can see in the video I make several easy mistakes.
Patience is always important. I often got careless, even after 10-20-30 attempts. Bad on me!
But remain patient and make each move you do with intention. I often forget it’s not a Devil May Cry game, it’s more hybrid. The combat feels slow, delayed. So I’m currently struggling with that. You don’t need to be fancy with this guy, just careful his large form doesn’t catch you. Fortunately, he has many frequent openings. Strike and retreat.
His fire form is annoying but in my opinion if you can get this far without the fire-proof vest, then you don’t really need it. You can dodge 3 times if you do get caught on fire, but otherwise he’s quite similar. He does have new or more powerful moves, but they are usually easy to spot.
Patience brings victory
I can keep saying to be patient and sound hypocritical, but it’s true, patience!
After so many attempts, I did beat him with fairly a fairly basic strategy. Of course he was frustrating, but I still had enjoyment from it. Now I’ll start using better weapons and armour; enough of the self-made handicap!
Onward to Chapter 2…
